CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Miami juniors Zack Collins and Bryan Garcia were among the 43 players recognized as semifinalists for the 2016 Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the top player in collegiate baseball and administered by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Miami was one of just seven school to have multiple players recognized as semifinalists. The only Dick Howser Trophy winner in Miami history is Mike Fiore, who won the first-ever trophy in 1987. Former third baseman David Thompson was a finalist for the award in 2015.
In games played through May 19, Collins and Garcia ranked among the ACC and national leaders in a number of statistical categories.
Collins had the 10th-highest average in the ACC (.372), the second-highest on-base percentage (.549) and the most walks of any player (61).
Among active Division I players, Collins entered the weekend ranked in the top five in career home runs, career RBI, career walks and career on-base percentage.
Garcia recorded his ACC-leading 13th save of the season on May 19, moving him into sole possession of second place in Miami history in career saves with 38.
Garcia, the nation’s active leader in career saves, has a 2.12 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 29.2 innings this season.
