CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team is set to open its 2016 spring season this weekend at the friendly confines of the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes, ranked No. 13 in the nation, will be hosting a trio of teams in the Miami Spring Invite, which runs from Friday through Sunday. Vanderbilt, the top-ranked team in the nation and the 2015 NCAA champion, joins No. 25 Ole Miss and No. 41 Texas in the event field.
Miami, which opens the season in the top 15 for the 12th year in a row, features a pair of singles players ranked in the top 10. Sophomore Sinead Lohan is seventh in the Oracle/ITA rankings, while senior Stephanie Wagner comes in at the ninth position. Additionally, sophomore Yolimar Ogando is ranked No. 21 and sophomore Wendy Zhang is No. 80.
In doubles, Wagner teams with fellow senior Clementina Riobueno to form the No. 22 duo in the nation.
Overall, the Miami Spring Invite field features 11 top-100 singles players. Vanderbilt features No. 15 Frances Altick, No. 24 Sydney Campbell and No. 33 Astra Sharma, the MVP of the 2015 NCAA Team Championship. Ole Miss’ roster includes No. 44 Tea Jandric, No. 55 Mai El Kamash and No. 84 Arianne Hartono, while Texas has No. 16 Breaunna Addison.
The four participating teams also combine for five ranked doubles pairs. Vanderbilt’s Campbell and Courtney Colton are No. 11, Texas’ Addison and Danielle Wagland come in at No. 28, Ole Miss’ El Kamash and Hartono hold the No. 47 spot and the Rebels’ Jandric and Tereza Janatova are No. 57.
Action is set to begin Friday at 9 a.m. with doubles matches, followed by singles play at 10:30. Miami will face Texas in doubles and Ole Miss in singles.
On Saturday and Sunday, doubles play begins at 8 a.m., with singles opening at 9:30 a.m. The Hurricanes meet Ole Miss in doubles and Vanderbilt in singles Saturday, followed by Vanderbilt in doubles and Texas in singles Sunday.
