University of Miami junior Bernard Tefel won a pair of matches in Ft. Myers, Fla., Friday morning to play his way into the quarterfinal of the Bedford Cup – State of Florida Championships. 

Tefel opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over No. 3 seed Jack Haffey of the host school, Florida Gulf Coast. He followed that with another two-set win over FAMU’s Jalen Evans. 

Sophomore Nile Clark also picked up a win on the first day of the event, but didn’t get to play his second match due to a lengthy weather delay. In the first round, Clark defeated Pierre-Emmanuel Fossier from Stetson, 6-1, 6-1.

In other matches, junior Jesse Flores fell, 6-2, 6-3, to No. 5 seed Andres Alfonso of FGCU while Niclas Genovese lost to UNF’s Lasse Muscheites, 7-5, 7-5. Kevin Bondar also lost, 7-5, 6-3, to Nico DeFraia of UCF.
