FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — Senior defensive back Dallas Crawford was among the 80 players named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service.”
Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the award is given to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
The football program representative on the University of Miami’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Crawford is a member of the team’s ‘Unity Council,’ serving as the leadership and voice of the Hurricanes. The Fort Myers, Fla., native, who was a position captain at running back in 2013 and defensive back in 2014, also assisted in the registration of more than 900 new marrow donor registrations in 2014 for the University of Miami Marrow Donor Drive. He served as project manager for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 drives.
Crawford has served as a youth football camp instructor on the annual Deserve Victory Tour, working with over 500 youths on football techniques at various youth football camps across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties across the month of June. In addition, Crawford represented the Hurricanes at the 2014 Autism Speaks Miami Walk.
Crawford, who made the switch from running back to safety prior to last season, recorded 35 total tackles and started five games in the defensive backfield in 2014. A special teams ace who has seen action in all three phases of the game, Crawford has totaled 51 tackles, one interception, 171 receiving yards, 581 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in three seasons.
The Atlantic Coast Conference led all conferences with 15 players appearing on the 2015 watch list.
Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.
