WACO, Texas – The brackets for both the NCAA Singles Championship and NCAA Doubles Championship were revealed Tuesday morning, with action set to begin Wednesday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Two Hurricanes will be participating in the singles competition in junior Stephanie Wagner and freshman Sinead Lohan. In the doubles field, Wagner pairs with senior Lina Lileikite.
A junior from Amberg, Germany, Wagner is seeded No. 9-16 and will meet Blair Shankle of Baylor, the host school for the tournament, in the first round of the singles play. An All-American after earning a seed for the singles draw, Wagner is ranked No. 11 in the nation. Shankle is unseeded and holds the No. 41 position in the ITA rankings.
Wagner and Shankle have already met once this season, when the Hurricanes and Bears squared off March 17 in Waco. Wagner won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Their NCAA Singles Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Lohan, the first ACC Freshman of the Year in program history, will take part in the second set of matches Wednesday morning. The Waterford, Ireland native will meet fifth-seeded Lauren Herring of Georgia in the first round of the tournament at 11:00 a.m. ET.
Ranked No. 37 in the nation, Lohan is among just seven true freshmen picked for the initial draw of 64 singles players, while Herring, at No. 5 in the ITA rankings, is the second highest ranked senior in the country.
Miami’s doubles pair of Lileikite, from Liepaja, Latvia, and Wagner, ranked No. 17, will also be facing off against Georgia’s Herring. She teams with Ellen Perez at the No. 11 spot in the ITA rankings.
The match is one of eight in the first round of the 32-pair NCAA Doubles Championship without a seeded duo. The time has not yet been announced, but the match will take place Thursday.
