@CanesRowing Set for Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Miami rowing program seeks to close out the fall strong in its final regatta of the fall this weekend at the Head of the Hooch.

The Canes will look to improve upon last year’s success at the Head of the Hooch. In 2013, Miami earned four Top 10 finishes including two wins, a second place finish and an eighth place finish.

“The team is excited to race in Tennessee this weekend,” head coach Dave Sanderson said. “They have put in many miles of hard work and are now looking forward to racing well to wrap up their fall season.  For the novices, it’s their first big regatta where they get to put their new rowing skills to the test and race for UM.”

The Hurricanes will feature seven entries in this renowned regatta. Miami’s two Championship 8+ boats are scheduled to race Saturday at 12:20 p.m., while the two Championship 4+ boats race at 5:05 p.m. Saturday. Three Miami boats will run in the Open 8+ race on Sunday at 12:33 p.m. Competitors will start sequentially and race against the clock across a 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) course on the Tennessee River ending at Ross’s Landing Park.

The Head of the Hooch features the largest number of entries of any major regatta, drawing over 2,000 boats and 6,000 rowers annually.  According to Rowing News Magazine, the Regatta “is recognized as one most laid back and hospitable regattas in the country,” and attracts over 15,000 spectators, who come to watch the races and enjoy the surrounding park festivities.

More information on the Head of the Hooch is available at the race’s official website, including information on parking and entries.
