Opening Statement

First of all, I want to congratulate Texas Tech on a win, they did a good job. Their pitcher pitched outstanding, had a good game plan and stuck with it all day. For us, we got to swing the bat better. We’ve got to get more opportunities, and take advantage of the opportunities we do have. We didn’t get any two out hits tonight to give us a chance to score.

Dale was saying that he himself and some other guys got away from their approach. Is that what you saw as well?

We haven’t faced a lefty quite like him in a while, a lot of fast balls and change ups. He did a great job of keeping us off balance, and our guys had trouble with that. We were out in front a lot. We’re out in front and we look like we’re guessing some.

Did you feel like they were starting to get impatient in the later innings?

Yeah, I mean I thought we were starting to press a little bit there late in the game. It’s a big game, we were struggling to get guys on base. He wasn’t walking guys, he was making certain of everything that we got and the defense played very well. We just didn’t put together any back to back hits and we did have a chance but we didn’t get it done.

Dale Carey on two of his at-bats:

The one in the fourth, I was just trying to do too much. I got away from my approach that I was going with the whole game, just trying to get something for my team. The last one I relaxed, and I was just taking what he gave me. He threw a fast ball down and way and I tried to drive it to the opposite field.

Diaz on his command: 

I felt I was better as the game went on. The first two innings I was struggling a little bit but I came back and I battled.

Carey on the team’s offensive performance:

Carey: I just think we’re trying to do too much. We’re putting too much pressure on ourselves. Especially me in those key situations I try to do too much. I just have to stay relaxed.

Dylan Dusek (SP)

Talk about the outing…

A great atmosphere out there. It was awesome to be at their park and being able to honestly just shut them down. I just felt great tonight. Maybe a little control problems, but everything worked my way. That’s how it went and with the great defense behind me.

How did you approach Miami knowing that they scored one run in the previous game?

My main goal for tonight, for always, is to always get ahead of batters. I did very well with that tonight, so that was pretty much one of my main successes.

What is about your makeup, your style that kept them off balance?

I’m usually worked backwards. I’m known as a crafty lefty, so if they haven’t seen many of those that’s probably what I’m used to hearing in my life. Fastball was on. Changeup was very good. Curveball was there occasionally.

Tim Proudfoot (SS)

How would you rate Dusek’s performance compared to his others this year?

It was unreal. He did a great job, controlled the game, and gave us a chance to give him some runs for him. He did a great job tonight.

How big were those early runs?

That was great. Last night took us awhile to get some runs, so it was good to get them early and give Dylan some support.

Coming in I just wanted to throw lots of strikes and give my defense behind me a chance.

 

Tim Tadlock (Texas Tech Head Coach)

Miami really competed well and I thought [Chris] Diaz was really tough as advertised. He really can pitch, really change speeds well. We were fortunate enough to get a few runs off him early. We really could settle it and really thought that even in the ninth we really caught some breaks. The ball that [Johnny] Ruiz hit, right at Timmy [Proudfoot], that ball couldn’t get squared up anymore. Sometimes it’s a cruel game.  It was definitely cruel to him at that moment. It was definitely cruel in that moment and it’s a tough game and our kids competed well. I’m really proud of them.

What was the decision like to pull Dylan Dusek after eight innings?

We were hitter to hitter for a long time there. I think we had Corey [Taylor] throwing as early as the fifth. He was tossing. We were talking about other options and talking about other guys in the bullpen. He stayed in the windup and even when he got in the stretch he made some pitches. He was pretty efficient. He was about as efficient as he’s been this whole season. Really great job under the circumstances.
