CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 17th-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team returns to action this upcoming weekend when they host Maryland and Notre Dame to kick off Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The Hurricanes begin their two-match weekend on Friday when the Terrapins come to town for a dual match at 12 p.m. The Terps are 4-1 and started the season 4-0 with wins over George Washington, Richmond, Penn and Old Dominion.
During Sunday’s 12 p.m. match against 22nd-ranked Notre Dame, there will be free food provided by Carolina Ale House, while supplies last.
After Sunday’s match, kids in first through 8th grade can participate in a clinic with Hurricanes women’s tennis players and coaches. There is a maximum of 50 participants, so be sure to RSVP at umwomenstennis@gmail.com.
The Hurricanes have started the season 4-2 and will return to play this weekend for the first time in a week. The Hurricanes’ last time out was at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, where they went 1-2 against fourth-ranked Georgia, 15th-ranked Vanderbilt, and 11th-ranked Michigan.
Leading the Hurricanes this spring season with six wins is Monique Albuquerque. The junior from Brazil is 3-1 at the No. 5 singles position. Two Miami players check in with five wins—No. 33 Kelsey Laurente and 45th-ranked Stephanie Wagner.
On the doubles end, Albuquerque and her partner Clementina Riobueno are 6-1 overall this spring and recently moved to No. 11 in the ITA collegiate doubles rankings.
Also having a strong spring is Miami’s No. 2 doubles team Melissa Bolivar and Laurente, posting a 5-1 record already.
With ACC play getting underway, the Hurricanes will host four consecutive home matches. Following Maryland on Friday, Feb. 21 and Notre Dame on Sunday, Feb. 23, Miami welcomes Boston College to town on Friday, Feb. 28. The next week, the 21st-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets enter Coral Gables for a noon match on March 2.
Currently, seven ACC teams—Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, Virginia, Notre Dame, Miami, and Georgia Tech—are ranked in the Top 25 nationally.
