Summer League Report: Carey Leads Chatham to Win

June 25, 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Despite the end of their postseason run in the program’s NCAA-record 40th consecutive Regional appearance, the Miami Hurricanes are continuing their trade in summer baseball leagues across the nation.

Over ten members of UBaseball were selected to three of the most prestigious leagues up and down the East Coast, including the Cape Cod Baseball League (Massachusetts), the Valley Summer League (Virginia) and the New England Collegiate Baseball League (across New England).

Dale Carey (Chatham Anglers, Cape Cod League) –
Rising junior Dale Carey has helped spark the Chatham A’s to a 6-3 start out of the gates in the Eastern Division of the Cape. Carey, who belted his first homerun of the summer season and made a highlight-reel grab in the Anglers’ 9-2 win over Yarmouth-Dennis on Friday, ranks second on the team with five runs scored. The Marietta, Ga. native went 1-for-3 and scored two runs in the Anglers’ loss to Cotuit on Sunday:

Brad Fieger (Falmouth Commodores, Cape Cod League) – Already boasting a breakout sophomore campaign in the middle of the Hurricanes lineup, rising junior Brad Fieger has continued to make an impact for the Cape’s reigning Western Division Playoffs Champions. Fieger, who scored the first run of the season in the Commodores’ opener against Yarmouth-Dennis, has recorded hits in four of his six games. The Naples, Fla. native went 1-for-2 with a run scored in the team’s recent 10-4 win over Hyannis (June 21), and went 1-for-3 in their weekend loss to Orleans (June 23).

Tyler Palmer (North Adams Steeplecats, NECBL) – After making an impact in his first season as a Hurricane, Tyler Palmer has continued his impressive 2012 campaign with a strong start to the NECBL season. One of three Hurricanes on the Steeplecats’ roster, Palmer has recorded hits in six of his nine games, including a recent 2-for-3 showing in a 5-3 win over Keene (June 24). Palmer raised his on-base percentage to a .444 (third-highest on the team) by reaching base three times in the outing, scoring a run and swiping a base in the win.

Alex San Juan (Staunton Braves, Valley League) – Despite his mixed role on the Hurricanes roster in 2012, Alex San Juan continues to prove why he was one of the team’s key contributors as a junior. San Juan, who has helped guide the Braves to a 2-1 record in their past three games, has gone a combined 4-for-9 (.444) with a double and one run scored since being inserted into the starting line-up. San Juan, who is joined on the Braves’ roster by Alexander Fernandez and Christian Diaz, is looking to help guide the Braves up the South standings from their current 9-10 mark.
