ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will be making its seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 against ACC rival North Carolina Thursday at 7 p.m. at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The 10th-seeded Canes (20-4) advanced to the third round after dispatching UNF and Utah by 4-0 scores in the tourney’s first two rounds respectively. Miami will be facing a seventh-seeded Tar Heel team (24-6) that narrowly escaped their regional final against Arizona, outlasting a Wildcat comeback attempt and winning, 4-2.
In their regular season meeting, the Hurricanes fell to UNC in a tight 4-3 decision, with UM’s Gabriela Mejia, Anna Bartenstein and Lina Lileikite earning singles victories.
Each sqaud features a pair of ranked doubles teams, the Canes No. 1 duo of Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmermann are currently ranked 20th, while Mejia and Lileikite currently sit at No. 76. The Heel’s pair of Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale are ranked in the Top 5 at No. 4 and Tessa Lyons and Haley Hemm are 81st.
In singles, Miami seniors, Bartenstein (No. 18) and Mejia (No. 27), along with 71st-ranked Lileikite will lead the Canes against the ranked foursome of UNC’s Zoe De Bruycker (No. 38), McHale (No. 39), Caroline Price (No. 104) and Featherston (No. 106).
