Tsukamoto and Soto Earn Victories Against Wake Forest

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Henrique Tsukamoto and Diego Soto earned a pair of singles victories for the No. 33 University of Miami in the Hurricanes’ 4-3 loss to No. 41 Wake Forest at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
Miami won two of its three doubles matches, but Wake Forest took four of the six singles matches to earn the victory.
“It’s a tough loss for us,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “We got off to a very slow start in singles, and lost too many first sets. Diego had a great day in singles and doubles, but as a team, we didn’t take advantages of opportunities to close out the match.”
Sophomore Diego Soto defeated Alex Tsai in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, and partnered with classmate Gabriel Flores to beat Danny Kreyman and Adam Lee in the No. 2 doubles match, 8-4.
Freshman Henrique Tsukamoto earned Miami’s other singles victory, downing Conner Sherwood, 6-4, 6-1.
Miami’s top doubles pair, Wifredo Gonzalez and Omar Aly, dropped Amogh Prabhakar and David Hopkins, 8-3, but Santiago Nieto and Victor Mauz lost in a tiebreak, 9-8 (3) , to Alex Tsai and Conner Sherwood.
In singles, Mauz and Aly each lost in three while Gonzalez came up short in a tie break with Prabhakar, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Flores was downed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 by David Hopkins.
“We need to regroup for tomorrow’s match against New Mexico,” added Rincon. “We need to get back on the horse and perform better than we did today.”
