CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami women’s tennis seniors Anna Bartenstein and Gabriela Mejia will head into the fall season nationally ranked in singles play, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Friday. In the initial 2011-12 Campbell/ITA Division I Rankings, Bartenstein comes in at No. 25 nationally in singles play, while Mejia is ranked 103rd.

Also announced on Friday, both Bartenstein and Mejia will be competing in next month’s Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in California. Bartenstein was been named a main draw alternate and qualifier in singles, while she and Mejia will compete as prequalifiers in the doubles portion of the event.

Bartenstein closed out her junior year as one of the more dominant secondary players in the country over the latter part of the season, as the Graz, Austria native won 16 of her final 18 singles matches. On the year, she went 24-7 overall, 19-4 in dual match play and an impressive 10-1 against ACC opponents in the No. 2 singles position.

Mejia was just as strong down the stretch for the Canes in 2011, winning nine of her last 11 matches – mostly at the No. 3 position — including going 3-0 in NCAA Tournament play. She finished the season with singles marks of 25-9 overall and 19-6 in dual match play.

Both players have earned postseason All-America honors in doubles in the past, as Mejia earned the distinction alongside Laura Vallverdu in 2010 while Bartenstein earned the same honor alongside Bianca Eichkorn in 2011.

Bartenstein, Mejia and the rest of the Hurricanes will open their fall season next weekend at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. The tournament is slated for Sept. 16-18.

Then, the Canes will travel to Orlando to play in a tournament at UCF the weekend of Sept. 23-25 before Bartenstein and Mejia will head to Pacific Palisades, Calif. for the Riviera All-American tournament, beginning the first week of October.
