COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 19th-ranked University of Miami baseball team is beginning the first of consecutive ACC road series this weekend, traveling to College Park for the first time since 2006 to face the University of Maryland. After next weekend, it will be three away ACC series for the Canes in four weekends.
The Hurricanes (22-11, 11-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) enter the three-game series working on an eight-game winning streak, including conference sweeps of Boston College (doubleheader in a three-game set shortened due to weather) and NC State, respectively.
Miami is led offensively by two players batting above the .300 plateau, including junior infielder/outfielder Rony Rodriguez with a team-leading .313 average. The Miami native also leads the Canes in slugging percentage (.556) and collected his team-high fifth home run of the season on Wednesday night in a win over cross-county opponent Barry University.
Just behind Rodriguez is sophomore outfielder Zeke DeVoss. He is hitting at a .308 clip – the third time this year he has eclipsed the .300 mark for average. DeVoss also leads the ACC in stolen bases with 21 (0.64 per game), while heading up the Canes in runs (35), tied for the team lead in hits (36), tied for the high in triples (2) and fielding at 97.3 percent on the year. DeVoss enters the weekend working on a five-game hit streak.
Sophomore shortstop Stephen Perez made his debut back at short as a defensive replacement for Harold Martinez on Wednesday, seeing his first action at short since March 23. Perez had been injured with a deep thigh bruise resulting from a collision at the University of Florida, and eventually had to sit out a few games due to severe swelling in his thigh.
Also back in the lineup for the Hurricanes was second baseman Michael Broad. Broad had a pulled hamstring, and made a relief appearance for DeVoss – covering second in Broad’s absence, in the late stages of the game against Barry.
Freshman Dale Carey continues to lift his average, now raising it 217 points since March 22 vs. UCF. The Georgia native now bats .267, and has started the last 11 games in the outfield.
Fellow freshman Brad Fieger is now batting .295 for the Canes, while junior Nathan Melendres is back near 100 percent after an injury to his wrist, and batting at .292 with 26 hits, seven doubles and a team-high matching two triples.
As a team, the Miami pitching staff is fourth in the league with a 3.23 ERA as a staff, led by the services of sophomore Steven Ewing, holding a 2.27 ERA and striking out a team-high 55 batters in 47 2/3 innings of work.

Miami Against Maryland
Miami owns a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series against Maryland, in a series dating back to 2005. The Canes won the first two meetings against the Terrapins that season before dropping the finale in the three-game set. The two teams did not meet from 2007-10, until UMiami swept a three-game series against the Terps last season in Coral Gables. This is the first time Miami is traveling to College Park, Md., since 2006 – with the Canes taking two-of-three from the Terps that year.
Scouting the Maryland Terrapins
The University of Maryland (16-18, 3-12 ACC) is led offensively by Ryan Holland with a .321 average at the dish, including a team-high 35 hits, eight doubles and 21 RBI. He slugs at a .440 average, and has swiped seven bases on nine attempts.
Behind him in the lineup is Charlie White with a .291 average, including a team-leading 21 runs scored on the campaign for the Terrapins. He also adds 30 hits and a team-high matching eight doubles to go along with 11 stolen bases on 11 attempts.
Friday night starter David Carroll enters the weekend working on a 5-2 record, and an ERA of 2.94. He has started in all eight games in which he has appeared, working 49 full innings and striking out 28 batters with a .258 average against.
The Terps come into the weekend having won two of their last three against Delaware State and Clemson (series finale), while dropping their last game against James Madison on Wednesday evening by a count of 13-12.
Going For Lucky Number 8
With two more wins, University of Miami head baseball coach Jim Morris will capture his 800th win at the “U”. While getting the win inside Alex Rodriguez Park would be special – two wins this weekend would mean a series victory and his 800th victory at UMiami.
Looking at the Pitchers for the Weekend
This weekend’s pitching matchup has yet to be decided for both ends. The Miami lineup will remain the same with the “Usual Suspects” – beginning with freshman left-hander Bryan Radziewski (5-2, 3.00 ERA) on Friday night against Maryland right-hander David Carroll (5-2, 2.94 ERA).
On Saturday, the Hurricanes will throw sophomore right-hander Eric Whaley (5-1, 3.19) and come back with fellow sophomore righty E.J. Encinosa on Sunday (2-2, 2.84 ERA). Maryland has yet to name starters for the next two games of the weekend’s series after Friday evening with Carroll.
In his last outing, Radziewski went 5 2/3 innings against NC State (April 8), allowing just a single run (unearned) on three hits and eight strikeouts in the win.
Fire Flame Hitters
Senior Chris Pelaez and sophomore Chantz Mack are both riding career-high hitting streams coming into the weekend against the Maryland Terrapins. Mack has hit safely in seven consecutive games, with Pelaez hitting in six straight games. Just behind them both is sophomore outfielder Zeke DeVoss with a five-game hitting streak.

As a team, the Hurricanes have won eight consecutive games, and look to match their season-high of nine straight games collected earlier this year between March 11 through March 23, as they enter Friday night’s game.
