TAMPA, Fla.-The University of Miami rowing team competed in the first of two scrimmages of the season when they faced Michigan Saturday on the Hillsborough River in Tampa. 

The teams raced five pieces that consisted of three-minute intervals rather than the standard 2,000-meter race. Results were reported in terms of margins from the crew immediately in front. The Hurricanes boated a Varsity 8+ and a Novice 8+, while the Wolverines brought three even eights and two novice eights.  

“The scrimmage went fairly well for us,” said head coach Andrew Carter. “Michigan is an outstanding team and they are an excellent standard against which we can measure our speed at this early stage.”

UM’s best finish of the day was second place with a 1.75 length behind Michigan’s 1V in the fifth interval.

“Our young squad responded very well to this challenge and the results were a significant improvement over this same scrimmage a year ago, noted Carter.”

The Hurricanes return home to take on Connecticut in the final tune up on Saturday, March 12.
