CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former University of Miami women’s basketball player Maurita Reid signed a contract to join the WNBA’s Washington Mystics franchise on Monday.

Reid, who played for the Hurricanes from 2006-08, was an All-ACC Honorable Mention selection during the 2006-07 season and a member of the All-ACC Defensive Team in 2007-08.

The 5-8 guard currently plays for the Croatian team Gospic, where she is averaging 17 points, five rebounds and five steals per game. She has also played professionally in Sweden, Aremenia and Poland. While in Poland (2009-10), Reid played for MUKS Poznan, where she led the league in scoring at 21.3 points per game.

If Reid were to suit up for the Mystics she, would become just the fifth Hurricane to play in the WNBA, joining Octavia Blue (1994-98), Kym Hope (1995-99), Tamara James (2002-06) and Desma Thomas (1992-97).

Reid ranks among the program’s best three-point shooters and ball stealers, ranking third all-time in made three-pointers (142) – even though she only played at UM for two seasons. She still holds the school single-game record with 10 steals in a game.

The Washington Mystics will tip off their 14th season on Saturday, June 4 on the road against the Connecticut Sun at 7 p.m. Washington’s home opener at Verizon Center is set for Saturday, June 11 at 7 p.m. against the Chicago Sky.
