Nov. 22, 2010
Greensboro, N.C. – University of Miami junior Lane Carico was named Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while libero Ryan Shaffer was selected Rookie of the Week, as announced by the ACC Office Monday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C.
In helping the University of Miami (22-8, 12-7 ACC) to a 2-0 week against Boston College and the University of Maryland, Carico supplied the offensive attack, and it was Shaffer providing defense in 3-0 sweeps of the Eagles and Terrapins, respectively. In the process, the `Canes extended their winning streak to four matches – and have now won six of their last seven overall.
Carico, a 5-11 outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, Calif., is collecting her first ACC weekly award this season. Over the weekend, she hit at a .333 clip with 36 kills and 21 digs. She laid claim to her league-best 24th double-double of the year against the Eagles with an 18-kill, 13-dig performance, striking at a .405 hitting percentage on 37 swings. Carico followed that performance with another match-high 18 kills against the Terps along with eight digs and a block assist. She did not allow a single receive error off-service in 14 total attempts.
For Ryan Shaffer, a 5-7 libero from San Jose, Calif., this is her first-ever conference weekly award. The Archbishop Mitty High alum finished the weekend with a team-leading 44 digs, staking back-to-back matches of 22 digs. She averaged 7.33 digs and 0.67 service aces per set in the Hurricanes’ two victories.
Facing the Eagles Friday, Shaffer collected 22 digs and also recorded a service ace. She added 22 more digs in the match against the Terps, along with three service aces. Both dig totals were match highs. She was flawless on serve reception, not allowing a single receive error in 29 attempts.
