Greensboro, N.C. – The University of Miami had five student-athletes named to the 2010 All-ACC Academic Rowing Team announced Thursday, July 8 by Commissioner John D. Swofford. The Hurricanes’ Sarah Medland, Theresa Recicar, Kate Rickers, Monika Sajincic and Molly Thornton all represented UM on this year’s team.

For Sarah Medland, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, the selection to the All-ACC Academic Team is her second consecutive. Currently, she is working towards a degree in Elementary Education, and was selected in June as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) scholar athlete. While rowing in a variety of seats during the 2009-10 campaign, she has helped Miami the past two seasons in achieving finals appearances in the Aramark South/Central Sprints.

The All-ACC Academic selection is also the second consecutive for junior Monika Sajincic, who began her UM rowing career a season ago after transferring into the program. The Piran, Slovenia native is majoring in Math, and was named a CRCA scholar athlete this past season. She served in the three-seat during the Knecht Cup in Bloomington, Ind., serving with the Varsity Eight crew.

Sophomore Theresa Recicar, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., is making her first appearance to the All-ACC Academic Team after earning her first CRCA Academic honor in June. The Accounting major served with the novice team a season ago, and worked her way into the Varsity Four boat this season. Recicar served in the second seat for a majority of the last part of the season in the Varsity Four boat.

Fellow 2010 CRCA Academic selection Molly Thornton, a senior from Walpole, Massachusetts, joins this year’s All-ACC Academic Team after recently completing her degree in International Finance and Marketing. Thornton, working in the second seat for the Varsity Eight for the Hurricanes at the Knecht Cup, has been a part of the program for the Hurricanes since arriving at UM as a freshman.

The final Hurricanes performer on this year’s team is senior Kate Rickers, a sport Administration major at UM. The St. Catharine’s, Canada native served in the bow seat for the `Canes Varsity Eight this past season, and helped the First Varsity Eight boat to a fourth place finish at the ACC Championships in Clemson, S.C. She came to UM prior to the 2008-09 campaign from Louisville, working her way from the Varsity Four up to the Varsity Eight in a year’s time.

A total of four All-Americans, 20 CRCA Scholar-Athletes and six CRCA All-Region honorees are featured on the 2010 All-ACC Academic Rowing Team. The 33 rowers were selected from a pool of 140 nominees from the ACC’s six schools who sponsor rowing–Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia–an impressive average of almost 23 nominees per school.

To be nominated for the All-ACC Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools.
