Three `Canes Named to All-ACC Baseball Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami baseball student-athletes E.J. Encinosa, Chris Hernandez and Jason Santana have been named to the 2010 All-ACC Baseball Academic Team, as announced Monday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. The honor, which recognizes ACC student-athletes for their outstanding performance in the classroom this past school year, is the second of Hernandez’s career and the first for Encinosa and Santana.

A Management major, Hernandez boasts a 3.21 GPA, is an AD Honor Roll member as well as a UM Book Buster. Santana graduated in Spring of 2009 with a B.A. in Criminology and is currently pursuing a Master of Liberal Studies Degree in the College of Arts & Sciences. He is a member of the AD Honor Roll as a UM Book Buster. Encinosa owns a 3.175 GPA and is also Book Buster in the School of Business.

Hernandez is one of eight players in the ACC that earned first- or second-team All-ACC honors in addition to earning the academic team honor. He is also one of five student-athletes featured on the All-ACC Academic team as well as at least one All-America team this season.

In addition to earning All-ACC honors on the field for the third straight season, Hernandez earned Louisville Slugger Third Team All-America honors in 2010. He leads the ACC with a 2.64 ERA, while ranking second in wins (10) and opponent’s batting average against him (.221), third in strikeouts (110) and fifth in innings pitched (105.2).

Encinosa recently earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors after going 1-1 with a 2.20 ERA. In 49 innings pitched, he recorded 61 strikeouts and held opponents to a staff-best .186 average against him.

Santana closed out his collegiate career with his most productive season as a `Cane, going 5-3 with a 5.54 ERA in 79 2/3 innings of work in 2010. The Miami native appeared in 17 games and started 14, holding his opponents to four runs or less in 11 of those starts.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
