Atlanta, Ga. – University of Miami senior diver Reuben Ross finished the second day of competition at the 2010 NCAA Zone `B’ Diving Championships on Saturday, claiming second place on the 3-meter springboard, and finishing fifth on the 1-meter, at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.
Ross, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan (Canada) and a seven-time All-American for the Hurricanes, took part in two events on Saturday.
He began the day with a second place finish in the finals on the 3-meter springboard, registering a score of 820.15 through the preliminaries and finals.
In the prelims, Ross sat in third place (367.60) before coming back strong in the finals.
In the 3-meter finals, Ross began his comeback with a Back 2 1/2 Somersault Pike, followed by a Forward 3 1/2 Somersault Pike. It was on his finals two dives that the four-year All-ACC male diver picked up big points.
On his second-to-last dive, Ross nailed an Inward 3 1/2 Somersault Tuck, before coming back to complete a Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault 3 1/2 Twist Free on his final dive. The two dives allowed Ross to score a 410.50 in the final round, moving him into second place behind first place finisher Nick McCrory of Duke (843.55).
The top three divers advance to the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Mar. 25-27 in Columbus, Ohio.
“It was a tough field Saturday with only the top three divers advancing to the NCAA’s,” stated Ross. “I needed to be consistent, and enjoy the pressure of the competition.”
In the nightcap, Ross took part in the 1-meter springboard competition, finishing fifth with a score of 723.30. Florida State’s Terry Horner (772.45) and Duke’s McCrory (743.05) finished first and second as fellow ACC competitors.
Ross’ dives for the 1-meter springboard included an Inward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck, a Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck and a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Pike, among three others.
According to the schedule, Ross – a 2008 NCAA Diving Champion – should step onto the 10-meter platform on Sunday at 10 a.m., for his final day of competition at this year’s NCAA Zone Championships.
