Rome, Italy – Reuben Ross, an All-America diver at the University of Miami, teamed with Riley McCormick in the men’s 10-meter synchronized platform Friday, qualifying for the finals with a fifth place showing as part of the FINA World Championships taking place at the Stadio del Nuoto in Rome. The finals of the 10-meter synchro platform are set for Saturday afternoon.
For Ross, Saturday’s finals will represent his third finals appearance of this year’s championships.
On Friday, the junior All-American and 2008 NCAA Champion (platform) teamed with countryman McCormick (Victoria, British Columbia) for six dives in the prelims on the 10-m platform. Together, the Canadian duo claimed a score of 423.72 in the round.
China’s Liang Huo and Yue Lin led all teams after the prelims posting a score of 480.06, with Germany’s team of Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein in second place (447.24). Cuba’s José Antonio Guerra Oliva and Jeinkler Ernesto Aguirre Manso placed third with a score of 427.38.
Ross and McCormick posted their highest score on the strength of back-to-back 86.70 scores on the fifth and sixth dives, respectively.
Ross (Regina, Saskatchewan) is no stranger to the 10-m platform finishing as an All-American in 2008 and ’09. Ross ended the 2008-09 campaign with a sweep of three consecutive All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas–claiming All-America honors in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform.
McCormick, a 17-year old soon-to-be collegiate freshman, partnered last with Ross (a rising senior at UM) in 2008. The two combined for gold at the Winter Senior National Championships in the 10-meter synchro.
The FINA World Championships or “World Aquatics Championships” are the World Championships for aquatic sports: diving, swimming, open water swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo. The Championships are run by FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation). In the pool, swimming events are contested in a 50-meter, or “long course” pool.
The event was first held in 1973, and is now held every two years. From 1978-1998, the World Championships were held every four years, in the even years between Summer Olympic years. From 2001 on, the World Championships has been held every two years, in the off years.
