Coral Gables, Fla. – No. 58 Boston College visits Coral Gables on Thursday as the No. 6 University of Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team hosts the Eagles in the ACC-opener for UM at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 10 a.m. Admission to the match is free for all to enjoy.
Miami (10-2) enters Thursday’s match having jump four spots to No. 6 in the latest Campbell’s/ITA national poll. Meanwhile, Boston College (4-3) makes their debut in the poll with a No. 58 ranking, though falling to ACC foe Virginia, 6-1, in their last match. UM defeated No. 18 Michigan in their last match a week ago, 6-1.
For the Hurricanes, four players remain ranked in the singles poll with sophomore Julia Cohen (15-4) making a leap up to No. 13 from No. 20. Junior two-time All-American Laura Vallverdu (12-5) dropped from No. 34 down to No. 39 this week, while sophomore Bianca Eichkorn (25-5) vaulted from No. 51 up to No. 40. Fellow sophomore Michaela Kissell (21-6) dropped two spots to No. 63.
Boston College previously had Lana Krasnopolsky and Lauren Cash ranked in the singles poll, but both fell out of the latest rankings.
UM leads the all-time series between the `Canes and Eagles by a commanding 15-0 advantage. The `Canes won last year’s only meeting, 7-0, in Chestnut Hill, Mass. In fact, the `Canes have won the previous four meetings between the two teams with either 4-0 or 7-0 shutouts, respectfully.
UM head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews needs just five wins to claim her 150th career victory, while Laura Vallverdu etched her name in sole possession of 20th place all-time in UM history for singles wins (75) after her 7-5, 6-2 straight-set defeat of No. 73 Rika Tatsuno (Michigan) a week ago. Teammate Bianca Eichkorn trails Leanne Gutkin (1993-96) by just one win at singles to tie for 35th all-time in singles wins for the Orange and Green.

About Boston College…
Boston College enters Thursday’s meeting ranked No. 58 in the latest ITA polls. The Eagles are led by seniors Lana Krasnopolsky and Lauren Cash, who both entered the season ranked in the top-10 in the East Regional ranking for singles play. They both fell out of the latest Campbell’s/ITA singles ranking this week. Krasnopolsky plays at the top position for BC and registered the most wins on the team as a freshman and was the first player in school history to earn ACC All-Conference Team honors as a sophomore. She has played in the No. 1 position throughout her career. Cash posted a 9-3 singles record in the fall season and is slotted in the No 3. singles position.
Miami Uses Four Singles to Score…
Miami is 57-12 in their singles matches this year, including 12-0 in their last two matches against No. 18 Michigan and No. 21 TCU. The Hurricanes have dropped just six matches altogether at the 1-3 positions.
You Know What I’m Saying…
Though speaking different native languages altogether, the doubles duo of Laura Vallverdu and Julia Cohen speaks two words easily. Whenever Laura says “Dale”, Cohen knows to go get it. And when Cohen says “Vamos, Lau”, Vallverdu already understands it’s time to go.
Feeling Right at Home…
With their match against Boston College, UM will be playing eight of their first 13 matches of the year at home in Coral Gables. UM enters their match against the Eagles with a record of 7-0 in the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Up Next for the `Canes…
Miami gets ready for yet another tough road schedule as they will take on No. 14 Clemson and No. 4 Georgia Tech in back-to-back days on Mar. 7 and 8. The Hurricanes will be facing last year’s ACC Tournament Champions–Clemson, while also playing the defending Individual National Champions–Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech.
