The Hurricanes (15-4, 8-2 ACC) will begin play Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they face the winner of No. 6 seed Florida State (16-6, 6-5) and No. 11 seed Boston College (9-12, 1-10), who will square off Thursday at 3 p.m. for the chance to battle UM in the second round.
Miami picked up a pair of 6-1 wins over the weekend against No. 45 NC State and No. 35 Wake Forest to guarantee the Hurricanes would finish fourth or higher in the regular season ACC standings – securing an opening round bye in the league championship — for the fourth-straight season that UM has been a member of the league.
Reigning ACC champion Georgia Tech earned the top seed in the tournament and will be in search of its fourth consecutive championship crown. The Yellow Jackets, who finished 18-4 overall and 10-1 in league play, will face either No. 8 seed NC State (12-9, 5-6) or No. 9 seed Wake Forest (8-12, 4-7) on Friday.
Also receiving first-round byes were second-seeded Duke (16-3, 9-2) and fourth-seeded Clemson (12-9, 8-3). The Blue Devils will face the winner of No. 7 seed Virginia (9-12, 5-6) and No. 10 seed Virginia Tech (14-12, 2-9) while Clemson will take on either No. 5 seed North Carolina (16-7, 7-3) or No. 12 seed Maryland (3-17, 0-11).
In last year’s ACC Championship, the fourth-seed Hurricanes advanced into the final where they would fall to the eventual NCAA champion and top-seeded Georgia Tech, 4-1.
Coverage of the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship will be made available On-Demand every night at 8 p.m. on www.ACCSelect.com from April 17-20.
