“I think that Vivek [Subramanian] and Carl [Sundberg] played well today and helped us put away some tough matches,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “UCF is a very well-coached team and is always ready to play. All of the Florida teams play each other very tough.”

With strong doubles wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions, the Hurricanes (5-2) jumped out to the 1-0 lead over the Knights (2-3). Miami’s 30th-ranked duo of All-American Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg cruised to the 8-1 win at No. 1, while UM’s 18th-ranked pair of Vivek Subramanian and David Rosenfeld clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 2.

In singles competition, Vallverdu – ranked seventh in the nation – continued his strong play at the top spot, using a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win to push the Hurricanes ahead, 2-0. Subramanian made it 3-0 with a straight-sets victory at No. 3.

UCF picked up its lone point with a win at No. 5, but it wasn’t enough as Miami clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win by Barnabas Carrega in the No. 6 position.

The Hurricanes closed out the match with tough wins by Rosenfeld, ranked 98th in singles play, at No. 2 and Sundberg at No. 4.

“Obviously it’s always good to win matches,” said Sundberg. “We got a good start today with the doubles wins at No. 1 and 2, and managed to get some straight-sets wins in singles. We’re going to have to continue to play better to win on Sunday.”

On Sunday, the Hurricanes return to action at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter for the second match in a three-match homestand. Miami will face No. 54 USF around 3 p.m., immediately following the Miami women’s match versus Baylor.
