CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Freshman left fielder Mark Sobolewski and sophomore center fielder Blake Tekotte combined for six hits and five RBIs and freshman lefty Eric Erickson won his seventh game as Miami completed the series sweep of Wright State with a 13-5 win Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field. Sophomore first baseman Yonder Alonso hit his 16th home run and joined teammates, designated hitter Jemile Weeks and shortstop Ryan Jackson with a two-hit day of his own.
The Hurricanes won their 30th game of the season improving to 30-19 while out-hitting the Raiders (27-18), 17-7. Sobolewski extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the second inning. He hit his sixth home run of the season in the fourth inning and finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Tekotte fell one hit shy of hitting for the cycle. He led off the game with a solo home run, tripled in a run in the third and singled in the fifth.
Erickson (7-3) scattered three hits over five innings, struck out three and allowed one unearned run. Five UM pitchers combined to toss the final four innings. Alonso went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Weeks was 2-for-4 with one run and Jackson went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.Wright State’s Kyle Kearcher fell to 7-4 as he gave up eight earned runs on nine hits and two walks. Seven different Raiders had at least one hit.Tekotte put the Hurricanes ahead, 1-0, when he led off with solo a home run to right center in the bottom of the first.
Jackson’s two-run double to left center in the bottom of the second sparked a four-run inning. He drove in Sobolewski and Richard O’Brien putting UM ahead, 3-0. After Roger Tomas walked, Alonso ripped a double to center field that scored a pair of runs giving Miami a 5-0 lead.
O’Brien’s double in the third inning scored Dennis Raben, who hit a leadoff single. Jackson drove in O’Brien to make it 7-0. Tekotte tripled down the right field to make it, 8-0.
The Raiders came within, 8-1, in the top of the fourth on Casey McGrew’s RBI groundout scoring Dan Biedenharn.
Sobolewski blasted a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left field in the bottom of the fourth putting UM ahead, 11-1. Alonso hit a solo home run to right center in the bottom of the fifth to make it, 12-1.
Wright State’s four-run sixth inning brought the Raiders within, 12-5. JC Ramatowski’s RBI single scored Biedenharn after back-to-back walks. Another walked loaded the bases for Brian Shoup, who sent a sacrifice fly to center field to make it, 12-3. Nick Allsop then hit a run-scoring single and Aaron Fields’ added an RBI on a groundout.
Miami’s last run came when Scott Maine, making his first career plate appearance, drew a bases loaded walk to make it, 13-5, in the bottom of the seventh.
Miami returns to action next weekend when the Hurricanes travel to Wake Forest for a key Atlantic Coast Conference series. Game times Friday, Saturday and Sunday are 3 p.m., 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday’s game will be televised by CSS.
Game/Series Notes: Miami hit .364 in the series pounding out 39 hits in three games … Sophomore first baseman Yonder Alonso hit .667 going 6-for-9 with five runs, three doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs. He walked five times, slugged 1.667 and owned a .786 on-base percentage … Sophomore second baseman Jemile Weeks continued his hot hitting going 6-for-12 against the Raiders. Weeks drove in five runs, scored three runs, doubled twice and hit the game-winning home run in the series opener … Sophomore center fielder Blake Tekotte and freshman left fielder Mark Sobolewski each had five hits. Sobolewski extended his hitting streak to 20 games. Tekotte hit .500 (5-for-10) with a double, triple, home run and four runs scored. He and Alonso each fell a hit shy of hitting for the cycle in games this weekend … All three Miami starting pitchers registered a win in a weekend series for only the second time this season. The rotation of LHP Scott Maine, RHP Enrique Garcia and LHP Eric Erickson struck out 22 in 20 innings, limited the Raiders to 14 hits and allowed only two earned runs. Maine struck out a career-high 12 in eight strong innings on Friday night … Miam’s pitching staff posted a 2.33 ERA, struck out 32 in 27 innings and held Wright State to a .202 batting average.
