CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami sophomore second baseman Jemile Weeks was named to the 2007 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List and junior pitcher Scott Maine was named to the Roger Clemens Award Watch List this week.

The Brooks Wallace Award is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player by the College Baseball Foundation. The Clemens Award is given to the nation’s top collegiate pitcher.

Weeks, who has already been named to the 2007 National Collegiate Baseball Writers (NCBWA) Preseason All-America Third Team, had a stellar freshman season at UM in 2006. He earned a spot on the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team and was a second team All-ACC pick at second base. He batted .352 in 66 games with 69 runs, six home runs and 40 RBI, and led the team with 90 hits and eight triples.

The 2006 postseason saw Weeks showcase his talents on the way to earning a starting spot on Team USA’s gold medal team. Weeks led the Hurricanes with a .459 average, five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI in the 2006 postseason, and was a key component in Miami’s run to a fifth-place finish in the 2006 College World Series.

He is the Hurricanes’ leading returner on offense and tied a freshman record with a 16-game hitting streak. Weeks also tied a school record with nine assists in one game at second base last season.

Maine, a southpaw who overcame a near-fatal auto accident in July of 2005, went 12-3 with a 4.57 ERA last fall. He led the team with 106.1 innings pitched last season and held opposing hitters to a .247 average. The junior was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies but optioned to return to Coral Gables for the 2007 season.

Miami will play its annual alumni game on January 27 before opening the season on Friday, Feb. 2 against Mercer at Mark Light Field.
