<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team opened the Atlantic Coast Conference season Friday with a 7-0 sweep over in-state rival No. 56 Florida State at the ScottSpeicherTennisCenter. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

The Hurricanes, winners of four in a row, improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while the Seminoles fall to 7-4 overall, 0-1 ACC.

 

No. 84 Melissa Applebaum opening singles play by snapping  a two match losing skid with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nicola Slater.

 

Sophomore Audra Cohen, ranked 13th in the nation, then extended her unbeaten streak to 13 when she topped Ania Rynarzewska, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 slot before junior Audrey Banada defeated Suzanna Mansour 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 position to clinch the match-win for the Hurricanes.

 

Freshman Monika Dancevic, playing at the No. 2 position for the first time this season, downed Tapiwa Marobela 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) as sophomore Caren Seenauth outlasted Lisa Nystrom-Skold 6-2, 5-6, 1-0 (12-10) at the No. 6 slot.

 

Sophomore Patricia Starzyk, playing at the No. 5 position, closed out competition with a 6-7, 6-1 (10-4) victory over Alina Mihailescu.

 

Miami opened the match by sweeping the all three doubles matches for the sixth time this season and fifth time in a row. UM’s doubles duo of Banada and Dancevic topped FSU’s Marobela and Slater 8-1 at the No. 2 slot before No. 21 Cohen and Applebaum defeated Masour and Rvnarzewska, 8-1 to clinch the doubles point at the No. 1 position. Seenauth and Starzyk downed Minailescu and Nystrom-Skold, 8-3 at the No. 3 slot to complete the sweep.

 

The Hurricanes return to action when they welcome No. 21 Pepperdine to the NeilSchiffTennisCenter Sunday, March 5. Match time is set for noon. Admission is FREE.
