CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team closed the first day of competition by winning five-of-six singles matches against players from Iowa at the Hurricane Fall Invitational Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes opened play with doubles against cross-town rival FIU. Miami’s doubles team of junior Emily Mowery and sophomore Caren Seenauth defeated FIU’s Marijana Cutuk and Courtney, 8-5.

In singles competition against Iowa, sophomore Patricia Starzyk claimed 6-2, 6-3 victory over Milica Veselinovic before junior Audrey Banada outlasted Hillary Mintz, 6-3, 4-6 (13-11).

Mowery lost only two games en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Merel Beelen as junior Ana Rupic downed Krissy Dowlin 6-1, 6-2.

Seenauth closed the day of competition by defeating Jacqueline Lee, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

Hurricane Fall Invitational action will resume Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricane Fall Invitational is in a hidden dual format where no team score is allotted and wins only count for individual records. Each day will begin with doubles matches at 9:00 a.m. and singles to follow. Singles will resume at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
