CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team opens the 2005 fall season at the annual Gator Fall Classic Friday-Saturday at the Ring Tennis Complex. The three-day event will feature Miami, Florida, FloridaState, FIU and Northwestern competing individually in both singles and doubles. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Gator Fall Classic will have no draw assembled. Instead, each coach will submit a “line-up” every morning and players from one team will face those from another team in either singles or doubles.
The Hurricanes will open the tournament at noon on Friday with doubles matches against Florida. Following doubles, the Hurricanes with then face Northwestern in singles. On Saturday, the Hurricanes will take on FIU in doubles at 9:00 a.m. followed by singles competition against Florida. Sunday the Hurricanes will play FloridaState in doubles beginning at 8:00 a.m. followed by singles against Florida International.
The Hurricanes had three players and one doubles team ranked in the ITA Preseason rankings. Junior Emily Mowery was the highest ranked Hurricane at 85th followed by senior Melissa Applebaum at No. 98. Sophomore Patricia Starzyk was also ranked No. 106. Applebaum and junior Audrey Banada begin the season ranked 12th in doubles.
