CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – No. 5 Miami fell behind early and fell farther behind late in a 13-1 loss to No. 17 Florida State in front of 2,904 at Mark Light Field Sunday afternoon. The Hurricanes dropped to 31-10-1 overall and 15-5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. FSU improved to 35-13 overall and 10-8 in the ACC.
UM starter Ricky Orta (6-3) was charged with the loss and gave up six earned runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in four innings. FSU’s Bryan Henry improved to 4-2 on the season, giving up one earned run in eight innings on four hits and four strikeouts with no walks.
Walter Diaz collected two hits for the Hurricanes and scored the team’s only run of the game.
Shane Robinson led the Seminoles, going 3-for-4 with three runs and a run batted in. Daniel Wardell went 2-for-4 with three runs and hit a grand slam in the fifth inning open up the scoring.
Robinson and Ryne Malone led off the game for Florida State with a pair of walks. Robinson advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Aaron Cheesman’s one-out single to right. Jack Rye drove in Malone with a sacrifice fly to give FSU and early 2-0 lead.
It was Robinson again in the second, tripling to right field to score Ryne Jernigan from third for a 3-0 cushion.
Roger Tomas got Miami on the board with his first hit of the series, a single to right field that scored Diaz from second base.
FSU broke the game open with a five-run fifth. Orta was relieved by freshman Manny Miguelez after loading the bases with no outs on singles by Tony Thomas and Robinson, and a walk to Malone. Miguelez struck out Gibbs Chapman before giving up a sacrifice fly to Cheesman that brought home Thomas for a 4-1 advantage. Rye took first after being hit in the head with a pitch and was followed by Wardell’s first-career grand slam to put FSU up, 8-1.
Robinson scored again in the sixth when a balk was called on Miguelez. Brant Peacher hit a two-run double off UM reliever Scott Maine in the seventh for an 11-1 Seminole lead. Jernigan completed the scoring with a two-run shot to left field off Jon McLean.
Although the Hurricanes won the first two games of the series, they were held to 11 runs for their lowest three-game offensive output of the season.
Miami returns to action on Friday, April 29 against Maryland at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
