CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Freshman Jon Jay drove in four runs with a 4 for 5 outing to lead the fourth-ranked University of Miami baseball team past visiting Ball State, 7-3, Saturday night in front of a crowd of 1,574 at Mark Light Field.
The Hurricanes’ (41-11) Danny Gil (7-0) earned the win, allowing three hits, no runs and no walks in 1.2 innings. Ball State’s (27-26) Jeff Michael (2-1) shouldered the Cardinal loss after allowing four earned runs and six hits in 2.1 relief innings.
Miami responded in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double by Braun, plating Jim Burt who reached base on an error by Ball State third baseman James Nowicki to lead off the inning. Braun came around to score the go ahead run for UM on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Tomas.
Jay then collected his third and fourth RBI of the game, bringing in Tomas and Sanchez to put Miami up 7-3. Jay’s four RBI marked a career-high as the Miami native added two doubles.
Ball State opened the first inning with a single by Mike Sullivan who would come around to score on a single by Brad Miller.
Joey Hooft scored the Hurricanes’ first run of the night in the bottom of the third inning, scoring from second on a double to right-center off the bat of Jay.
With the score tied at one Jay brought in his second RBI in the fifth with his second double of the game, scoring Gaby Sanchez in the fifth inning to push the Hurricanes on top, 2-1.
Erick San Pedro extended the Miami lead in the sixth, doubling to left-center to score Ryan Braun from first base. Following an issued walk to Roger Tomas, Ball State starter Andrew Anderson would surrender the pitching duties after 5.2 innings work to Michael, who closed out the inning with the Hurricanes leading 3-1.
Miami’s Ricky Orta came on relief for Camardese in the top of the eighth inning. Camardese, the UM starter, went eight innings, allowing only one run on six hits while walking two and striking out three. Orta’s outing lasted just three batters, replaced by Chiqui Chirino with runners at first and second with one out.
After walking the Cardinals’ Keil Holman to load the bases, Chirino was replaced by Gil, who was greeted with an RBI single by Ball State’s Jason Bucholtz. The Cardinals would tie the score at 3-3 before the end of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center by Kyle Dygert, scoring Lucas Fry.
The Hurricanes return to action Thursday, May 27, hosting Long Beach State at Mark Light Field at 7 p.m.
