CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The fourth-ranked Miami Hurricanes got a career-high eight strikeouts from Cesar Carrillo and four solo home runs to beat Ball State, 4-2, Friday night in front of 1,413 fans.
The Hurricanes improve to 40-11 on the season and have won three straight games. Ball State falls to 27-25 on the year.
Cesar Carrillo improved to 9-0 on the season, allowing two runs – one earned – on five hits in seven innings. BSU starter Joe Ness took the loss to fall to 6-4 on the season. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.
Miami closer Danny Gil stuck out two Cardinals in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Adam Ricks led UM’s nine hit attack with two hits – including a home run – and a sacrifice bunt.
After snapping a six-game skid without a home run Thursday night, the Hurricanes cracked four long balls on Friday.
Brian Barton and Jim Burt hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to Miami back on top 3-2. It was Burt’s 11th of the season, tying his career high set last season and the sixth of the season for Barton.
UM added to the lead with another solo home run in the seventh inning as catcher Erick San Pedro went deep for the second consecutive night to give the Hurricanes a four run lead. It was San Pedro’s ninth home run of the season.
Ricks laced a 3-2 pitch over the right-field fence to lead off the fourth inning and give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.
Ball State struck back quickly with a back-to-back doubles off the bat of Lucas Fry and Kiel Holman. Holman scored on a sacrifice fly from Jason Bucholtz after Kenny Bargfeldt sacrificed him over to third base with a bunt.
The Hurricanes wrap up their three-game series Ball State Saturday night at 7 p.m.
