CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 30th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team couldn’t hold off No. 6 Duke Sunday afternoon, falling to the Blue Devils (16-5), 6-1 in Durham, N.C.
The Hurricanes (11-5) fell early, dropping the doubles point when the 7th-ranked doubles team of Phillp King and Jonathan Stokke downed Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) and Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.), 8-1 in the No. 2 flight followed by Duke’s tandem of Stephen Amritrai and Peter Rodrigues upending Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.) and John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.), 8-2 at No. 3.
Heading into singles, the Blue Devils would quickly take a 2-0 lead when the Hurricanes’ Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) was forced to retire due to an injury in the No. 3 slot after losing to Rodrigues in the first set, 6-1.
Cohen would then take his second loss of the season, falling to No. 7 King, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, putting Duke one point away from the victory.
The Blue Devils’ Jason Zimmermann then clinched the match for Duke, overtaking Hoyes, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4.
UM’s Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) took the Hurricanes’ only point of the afternoon, downing Stokke, 7-6 (5), 7-5 at No. 5.
The Hurricanes will return to action next weekend, traveling to Clemson on April 10 and Georgia Tech April 11.
