Sanchez's Three-Run Home Run Rallies Miami Past FSU, 7-3
April 17, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Gaby Sanchez lined a low fastball over the left-field fence in the sixth inning to give Miami its first lead of the game as the Hurricanes went on to beat Florida State, 7-3, in front of 6,328 fans at Mark Light Field.
With the win, Miami Head Coach Jim Morris won his 500th game at the University of Miami and the Hurricanes improved their record to 28-7 on the season, while the 14th-ranked Seminoles fell to 25-13.
Cesar Carrillo (6-0) earned the win for the Hurricanes with seven innings of work. He struck out a career-high seven batters, while allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. George Huguet came on to pitch the final two innings to close out the game.
Mark Sauls (3-3) took the loss for FSU, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 6.1 innings.
Sanchez’s three-run home run in the sixth inning gave Miami a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish. It was the third home run of the season for Sanchez.
The Hurricanes would go on to add three runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Burt’s two-RBI double highlighted the inning along with a RBI single by Adam Ricks.
Burt’s two RBIs increased his season total to 48, tying his career high set as a sophomore in 2002. Rick, Sanchez, Richard Giannotti and Roger Tomas all collected two hits in Miami’s 10-hit attack.
FSU jumped on Carrillo in the first inning for the second straight week, after he allowed four runs in the first inning for the Noles last week in Tallahassee. The Seminoles got to Carrillo for two runs in the first inning tonight with a Gibbs Chapman RBI single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ryne Malone.
The two runs marked the first time FSU had scored on the Hurricanes since the ninth inning of Miami’s 17-11 win in Tallahassee on Saturday, April 10, snapping a stretch of 18 innings.
Florida State extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning with a RBI double by Stephen Drew. Miami scratched the scoreboard with a single tally in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single from Tomas.
Drew’s two hits and one RBI paced FSU’s five-hit attack.
Florida State and Miami wrap up their six-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mark Light Field. The game will be broadcast live on the Sunshine Network.
