CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Eric Hechtman held on to win in straight sets at the No. 2 singles position to lift the 32nd-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team over in-state foe Central Florida, 7-0 Wednesday evening at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, keeping the Hurricanes’ (8-0) unbeaten streak alive.
Miami jumpstarted the match when teammates John Hoyes and Jeremiah Fuller paired up to overpower UCF’s (5-8) Paul Ramy and Rhett Rosen, 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Trailing 6-4 at No. 3 doubles, UM’s tandem of Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman rattled off four straight points against Golden Knight’s Ener Gursoy and Gabriel Strangberg to win 8-6, sealing the doubles point for Miami.
Tim Krebs would lead the Miami charge in singles play, overtaking Simon Jaegar, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.
Cohen then won in the No. 1 slot over Antonio Sierra, 6-2, 6-3 to remain undefeated in dual play this season at 8-0.
Hechtman handled UCF’s Strangberg in the first set at No. 2, winning 6-3 and continued to roll into the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Strangberg then answered with four straight points before Hechtman smothered the comeback to win 6-4, clinching the match for the Hurricanes, and earning his eighth straight win in singles this season.
Hoyes would win at No. 3 singles over Central Florida’s Gursoy, 7-6, 6-4 while Fuller downed Paul Ramy, 4-6, 7-6, (10-7) at No. 6 and UM’s Colin Purcell held off Joel Allen in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 playing at No. 5.
The Hurricanes return to action March 10, hosting Penn at 6 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
