Coral Gable, FL (hurricanesports.com) – ESPN announcer Bob Carpenter will be the keynote speaker at the annual University of Miami men’s basketball awards banquet on Wednesday, April 9 at the Mayfair House Hotel in Coconut Grove, FL.
The event will begin with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. with dinner following at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person in advance or $400 for a table of eight. Carpenter, considered one of the nation’s most versatile sportscasters, just finished his 15th year of College Basketball for ESPN. He has regularly shared the microphone with ESPN personalities Dick Vitale, Bill Raftery, Larry Conley, Jimmy Dykes and the late Jim Valvano. He has established himself as one of College Basketball’s top announcers on ESPN, and for the last eight years has been the voice of Conference USA, and the voice of the Mountain West for the last seven years.
Carpenter started with ESPN in 1988 handling play-by-play of Saturday Night Prime Time College Football, then in ’89 moved into the studio to host College Gameday and the College Football Scoreboard shows. ESPN obtained the rights to Major League Baseball in 1990, and since then Carpenter has done play-by-play of more MLB games than any network announcer in the nation. He has also called the College World Series and hosted Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies.
A native of St. Louis, the 18-year Major League Baseball veteran has made stops in the broadcast booths of the St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, New York Mets and Minnesota Twins. Carpenter was nominated for a New York Emmy with the Mets in ’93, then won Mid-America Emmys for his Cardinals work in ’96 and ’97, and was nominated in ’98 and ’01. He teamed with future Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith in the St. Louis booth, and has worked with present Hall of Famers Bob Gibson, Jim Palmer and Joe Morgan on ESPN.
Between 1982-88, Bob appeared on a variety of events for USA Network: basketball, football, boxing, pro soccer, tennis (including the U.S. Open) and golf (including The Masters). Other career highlights include six college football bowl games and the World Cup Soccer Tournament for ESPN in 1982 and ’96.
