CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The top-seeded Miami men’s and women’s tennis teams will open play in the 2003 BIG EAST Tournament Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the UM campus.

After receiving a first-round bye in the tournament the men’s team will face No. 4-seeded Rutgers, while the women’s team will face No. 4-seeded Virginia Tech.

Following the Miami matches No. 2 seeded Virginia Tech men will face No. 3-seeded Notre Dame, while No. 2-seeded Notre Dame women will face No. 3-seeded Boston College at Noon.

The afternoon (3 p.m.) matches in the consolation bracket will pit, No. 5 Boston College men vs. No. 6 St. John’s, while No. 5 Rutgers women will face No. 6 Syracuse.

Day One Men
In the first match of the day, No. 4 seed Rutgers defeated No. 5 Boston College 4-1. After dropping two-of-three doubles matches, the Scarlet Knights earned victories at No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 singles to defeat the Eagles. Rutgers advances to the face the No. 1 seed Miami in the morning match at 9 a.m. Saturday.

No. 3 seed Notre Dame took the first two doubles en route to a 4-0 victory over sixth-seeded St. John’s. The Irish advance to face the No. 2 seeded Virginia Tech at Noon on Saturday, while the Red Storm will square off with BC in the fifth-place match at 3 p.m.

Day One Women
No. 4 Virginia Tech took two-of-three doubles matches from No. 5 Rutgers to take a 1-0 lead in the match and went on to win three-of-four singles matches earning the 4-1 victory. VT will face defending champion and No. 1 seeded Miami at 9a.m. on Saturday.

Third-seeded BC took wins in the top three singles sports to get past No. 6 Syracuse 4-1. The Eagles move on to face second-seeded Notre Dame at Noon on Saturday. Rutgers and Syracuse will meet in the fifth-place match at 3 p.m.
