Hurricanes Pound St. Peter's, 16-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The Miami baseball team defeated St. Peter’s College, 16-2, in front of 1,005 fans Tuesday night at Mark Light Field.
With the victory over the Peacocks, the No. 13th ranked Hurricanes improve their season record to 16-4, while St. Peter’s College falls to 0-3.
Sophomore outfielder Richard Gionnatti led the offense for the Hurricanes going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, the second time in his career, and recording a career-tying high three RBI on the night. Additionally, Giannotti scored two runs and stole his first base of the season.
Starting pitcher Brandon Camardese (4-0) recorded the win for Miami going five innings, giving up two hits and one earned run, while striking out five batters. St. Peter’s College pitcher Dan Cainas took the loss, going 3.2 innings, giving up eight hits, 13 runs (eight earned), and four walks, with three strikeouts.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring in the first inning with Ryan Braun’s two-out solo homerun to right field. Braun’s seventh home run of the season was his second home run in consecutive at bats.
Miami extended its lead, 6-0, in the second inning scoring five runs on two hits and two errors. After a lead off single by Gaby Sanchez down the left field line, two fielding errors by the Peacocks and a couple of sacrifice flies by Danny Figueora and Adam Ricks the Hurricanes had a six-run cushion.
The Hurricanes added three runs in the third inning on two hits and an error. After Sanchez and Brian Barton reached base on a walk and single, respectively, Richard Giannaotti doubled scoring Sanchez from second and advancing Barton to third. An error by the left fielder scored Barton, while a passed ball scored Giannotti to give the Hurricanes a 9-0 lead.
Miami tacked on four runs in the fourth inning extending its lead, 13-0, on four hits and two hit by pitches. Two walks also helped the Hurricanes build a 13-run lead and chase Peacock starting pitcher Dan Cainas from the game.
St. Peter’s College broke its streak of four consecutive scoreless innings in the fifth inning with a run by Russell Rinaldi. Rinaldi led off the top of the inning with a triple of the wall in left center and scored on a wild pitch from Camardese.
Miami extended its lead, 16-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring three runs on three hits and two walks, highlighted by freshman Israel Chirino’s first base hit and RBI as a Hurricane.
The Peacocks added another run in the seventh inning, cutting the lead 16-2, on an RBI single to right field by Mike Quevedo scoring Devin Roundtree.
The Hurricanes are back in action Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field against Stony Brook.
