CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami sophomore Dan Andrews (Holiday, Fla.) set a new world record on the way to a gold medal in the 800 meters Monday at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lille, France.

Andrews, who runs with a prosthetic left leg, crossed the finish line in two minutes, 7.18 seconds, and continued to solidify his status as the world’s top parathlete sprinter. He dominated the field, shattering his old world mark by 1.07 seconds along the way. Fellow American Andrew Lester was second in 2:08.59.

A gold medallist in the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Andrews lowered the 800m world mark for the second time this year. Previously, Andrews had set a mark of 2:08.25 while winning the 800 at the Disabled Sports International Challenge at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando in May.

Andrews will continue competition at the World Championships on Wednesday when he competes in the 400-meter dash, an event in which he holds the American record. He also is slated to compete as part of U.S. relay unit in the 4×100 and 4×400-meter relays.
