Athens, Ga. (hurricanesports.com) – Senior diver Imre Lengyel captured secondplace in the 3-meter springboard competition in the second day of the 2002 Men’sNCAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campusof the University of Georgia in Athens.

Lengyel (Budapest, Hungary) boosted his prelim score from 578.70 to 624.30 inmoving up to second. Troy Dumais of Texas won the event with a finals score of673.80.

Lengyel took second in the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the Zone B Diving Championshipsin Lexington, Kentucky to qualify for nationals. He was named 2002 BIG EAST MostOutstanding Men’s Diver after capturing BIG EAST titles in both the 1- and 3-meterevents in February. In 2000, Lengyel competed for the Hungarian Olympic team andwas first honored as the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Men’s Diver.

Junior Kyle Prandi (Strongsville, Ohio), freshman Miguel Velazquez (Mexico City)and senior Stefan Ahrens (Lichtenhagen-Dorf, Germany) just missed qualifying forthe finals round. Prandi finished ninth (547.00), Velazquez 10th (536.85 ) andAhrens 11th (526.55 ). The top eight scores in the prelim rounds advance to finals.

The University of Miami is in 13th place in team standings with 64 points at thecompletion of the second day of events in Athens. The only other BIG EAST teamincluded in the field of 35 is Pittsburgh at 24th with 14 points. Texas leadsthe event with 376 points followed by Stanford with 361 and Auburn with 252.5.

The quartet of UM divers conclude competition at the NCAA’s with the platformevent on Saturday.
