CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami head football coach Larry Coker has been named one of three finalists selected for Football News magazine’s 2001 Coach of the Year Award.

Coker, in his first season at UM, is one of three coaches in their first year at their school to be selected as finalists. The former UM offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach has led the Hurricanes to a No. 1 ranking in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches rankings while guiding the team to a 9-0 start. He is attempting to become the first first-year head coach to win a national championship since Bennie Oosterbaan did so at Michigan in 1948.

Coker joins Brigham Young’s Gary Crowton and Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen as a finalist.

The official announcement of FN’s Coach of the Year will be made Wednesday, Dec. 12. Last year’s Football News Coach of the Year was Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops. The Football News Coach of the Year finalists, as selected by the publication’s editorial staff:
