Aug. 20, 2001

Coral Gables, Fla. ( — The University of Miamivolleyball team held a full-squad scrimmage Monday afternoon, August 20, to wrapup a spirited day of practice. Tuesday marks the final day of two-a-days as classesbegin on the UM campus on Wednesday.

New volleyball rules effective for the 2001 season include a rally-point scoringsystem for every game. There are no side outs and and points are awarded on everyserve. Each match is decided by the best three out of five games. First team to30 wins the game. If a fifth game is required, the first team to 15 takes thematch.

“It was time to get in our uniforms and to get used to what it felt likeon our home court,” said head volleyball coach Nicole Lantagne. “Therewere people here in the stands and we’ve been alone in a gym for so long thatit was good to have some distractions.”

“Being a young team, everyone’s still getting used to each other. We expecta lot of players to contribute. Every team knows there are injuries as you gothrough the season so you have to be prepared to rely on people who may not beyour actual starters.”

The Hurricanes open the 2001 season away from home on Friday, August 31, at 7p.m. against Davidson College at the Davidson Tournament in Davidson, NC. Miami’sfirst home match is on Friday, September 7, at 2 p.m. against Long Island at theKnights Sports Complex on the UM campus. The match coincides with the inauguralHurricane Invitational.
