Varsity Eight Claims Silver Medal At SIRA

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami varsity women’s eight placed second to Clemson in the finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, TN.

The state of Florida’s top-seeded boat in the Southern Championship UM finished with a time of 7:04.86 to the Tigers’ 7:02.04. Kansas State took third with a time of 7:08.94, followed by Duke, Tulsa and Tennessee.

The women’s varsity eight for the SIRA consisted of coxswain Jenny Lee, Jenny Krawec, Monika Manios, Jacqui Julien, Dorien Ten Have, Amanda Turner, Bridget Gallagher, Yianna Reizakis and Marijka VanderPol.

Also claiming a top-finish was the varsity pair, which won its race with a time 8:58.54. The pair, featuring Cathy Dunnet and Lindsey Tarabula, defeated Duke (9:25.62), Emory, NSU and UCF.

The women’s second varsity eight won the Petite Final in its division with a time of 7:16.58, ahead of UCF (7:19.79) and Kansas State (7:21.37). UM’s second varsity eight consisted of coxswain Meg Venezia, Bernadette Lack, Jordanna Heywood, Ananda Chou, Caroline Stewart, Stephanie Tilley, Trisha Blackwell, Maggie Knuth and Dorothy Clay.

The University of Miami women’s crew will return to action next weekend, Sunday, April 29 at the inaugural BIG EAST Championship on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA.
