Baseball Hands Morris 1,000th Career Win In 5-3 Victory

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – University of Miami head coach Jim Morris won his 1,000th career game as the #6 Hurricanes completed the three-game sweep of Northeastern6 (2-7), 5-3, at Mark Light Stadium. Miami (25-6), ranked as high as sixth by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, defeated the Huskies on 5-3 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday.
UM starter Tom Farmer (6-1) went 7.0 innings with six hits, three runs (all unearned) with one walk and six strikeouts. Luke DeBold and George Huguet combined to shutout the Huskies over the final 2.0 innings. Huguet earned his third save of the weekend.
In his third stint as a head coach, Morris has an overall record of 1,000-398-2. At Miami, he has guided the Hurricanes to a 365-113-1 mark. From 1982-1993, Morris recorded a 504-244-1 record at Georgia Tech. He started his career totaling a 131-41 record at DeKalb (GA) Community College from 1976-1979.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring in the third inning, 1-0, with Matt Dryer’s solo home run over the scoreboard in left field. The home run was Dryer’s first as a Hurricane.
Northeastern came back with three runs, 3-1, in the fourth inning off three hits and one UM error. Mike Lomuscio led off the inning with a double to left center. Coley O’Donnell rhen reached on a fielder’s choice grounder. A throwing error on the play allowed Lomuscio to score and O’Donnell to move to second. After Hernan Guerrero grounded out, Todd Korchin singled to right field and moved O’Donnell to third. Korchin then moved to second on a pass ball. Both O’Donnell and Korchin scored on Pedro Pena’s double to centerfield.
UM tied the score, 3-3, in the fifth on three hits. Marcus Nettles led off the inning with a bunt single and took second on a balk. Javy Rodriguez followed with another bunt single, also allowing Nettles to move to third. Kevin Howard knocked in Nettles with ground out to first base. Javy Rodriguez would later score on a double from Danny Matienzo.
UM went ahead, 4-3, in the sixth when Kevin Brown scored second on Nettles’ double down the left field line. Brown had led off the frame also with a double down the left field line.
The Hurricanes added another run, 5-3, in the seventh Howard tagged up from third on Mike Rodriguez’ sacrifice fly to centerfield. Howard led off the inning with a single to centerfield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matienzo. He took third on a single from Kevin Mannix.
Miami returns to action next weekend, March 30-April 1, in a three-game series against Cal State Fullerton at Mark Light Stadium. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games can be heard over the Internet at hurricanesports.com.
