March 11, 2001
Coral Gables, FL –
The University of Miami men’s basketball team received an invitation to the 32-team National Invitation Tournament. The Hurricanes (16-12, 8-8 BIG EAST) will face Auburn University (17-13, 7-9 SEC) in the opening round on Wednesday, March 14 starting at 8:00 p.m. (ET) at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum (10,500) in Auburn, AL.
“I feel good that we have the chance to participate in the NIT,” said head coach Perry Clark. “Mentally this is a reward for hard work and I’m happy for our players to have the opportunity to play in the post-season.”
Miami is making its fifth straight post-season appearance and its sixth trip all-time to the NIT. The Hurricanes have now advanced to post-season play in six of the last seven seasons (NCAA-1998, 99, 00, NIT-1995, 97, 01).
Miami and Auburn have met only once previously with the Hurricanes defeating the Tigers, 87-73, on December 17, 1966. Auburn is making its third consecutive post-season appearance and its fifth overall appearance in the NIT. Auburn last appeared in the NIT in 1998.
The Miami-Auburn winner will play the winner of the Illinois State-Purdue game at a time and location to be determined at a later date.
Tickets for the Miami-Auburn game are $10.00. To order tickets, contact the Auburn ticket office at 800-282-1957 or 334-844-4040.
