Barnes Names BIG EAST Rookie of the Week

New York, NY – University of Miami freshman guard Marcus Barnes (Miami Senior) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after leading the Hurricanes to a pair of conference victories. Barnes is the first Hurricane since Tim James on March 3, 1996 to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors.
Barnes averaged 22.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as Miami recorded wins over Providence and No. 15 Connecticut.
Barnes scored 20 points to lead the Hurricanes to their first BIG EAST win of the season at Providence, 78-64. He came back with a career-high 24 points as Miami defeated No. 15 Connecticut, 77-74, at the Miami Arena.
Barnes has stepped up his play in BIG EAST Conference games averaging 15.2 points in six league games. Barnes only averaged 3.6 points in Miami’s 11 non-conference games.
