TONIGHT’S OPPONENT: St. John’s enters tonight’s contest with a record of 10-6, 4-1 in the BIG EAST following an 82-70 home win over Villanova on Saturday. Junior forward Anthony Glover recorded 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the Red Storm.
The Red Storm have won three straight games and six of their last seven after a 4-5 start this season. Leading St. John’s in scoring are a pair of freshmen guards.
Point guard Omar Cook leads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per game and is also the team’s top assist man at 9.2 assists per contest. Willie Shaw, a 6-6 shooting guard, ranks second on the team in scoring at 16.3 points per game.
St. John’s is currently tied with Boston College for first-place in the BIG EAST East Division.
THE SERIES: Miami and St. John’s meet for the 22nd time with the Red Storm leading the all-time series 11-10. Miami is 8-7 against St. John’s in BIG EAST regular season play including three straight wins. Miami and St. John’s have met three times in the BIG EAST Tournament with the Red Storm winning twice. St. John’s has knocked off the Hurricanes in the semifinals of the last two BIG EAST Championships. Additionally, Miami’s first BIG EAST win (1-14-92) and first BIG EAST road win (1-11-95) both came against the Red Storm.

Sophomore Anthony Glover hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining to lift 19th-ranked St. John’s to a 58-57 win over 23rd-ranked Miami in the semifinals of the AT&T BIG EAST Championship. Second-seeded Miami, which took a 57-56 lead on two free throws by Mario Bland with 7.6 seconds left, was given one last chance as St. John’s Lavor Postell, who led the Red Storm with 14 points, was called for a foul as the Hurricanes inbounded the ball. Freshman Leroy Hurd went to the line but missed the front end of the one-and-one. Elton Tyler had 15 points to lead Miami. Mario Bland and Johnny Hemsley had 13 points each. St. John’s took a 48-41 lead on a 3-pointer by Postell with 10:36 to play but the Hurricanes scored seven straight points, the last five by Hemsley, to close to 50-48 with 7:01 to play. Hemsley’s 3-pointer with 1:05 left brought Miami to 56-55. Postell missed a jumper with 37 seconds left, and Miami ran the clock down until Bland’s free throws with 7.6 seconds left gave UM the lead.
UP NEXT: Following tonight’s game Miami returns home for a four game homestand against Providence (Jan. 28), Seton Hall (Feb. 2), Virginia Tech (Feb. 6) and St. John’s (Feb. 10).

ON THE COACHES: Miami head coach Perry Clark was named the Hurricanes’ head basketball coach on on July 6, 2000. Clark comes to Coral Gables having spent 11 seasons at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. With the Green Wave, Clark compiled a 185-145 (.561) record, had six 20-win seasons, seven postseason appearances (3 NCAA, 4 NIT) and won the Metro Conference championship in 1992. He was the 1992 National Coach of the Year and a two-time Metro Conference Coach of the Year (1991, 1992). Last season Clark finished 20-11 and captured the Conference USA National Division crown. Additionally, Tulane received a bid to the NIT. Clark’s career record stands at 195-152 (.562) including a 10-7 record this season.
St. John’s head coach Mike Jarvis is in his third season with the Red Storm and 16th season overall. Jarvis’ record at St. John’s is 63-23 (.733) while his all-time record stands at 316-164 (.658).

FRESHMEN STEPPING UP: In Miami’s 78-64 win over Providence (1-16-01) the Hurricanes’ freshmen class of Darius Rice (19 points), Marcus Barnes (20 points) and Rodrigue Djahue (10 points) gave a glimps at what the future holds for Miami. The three combined for 49 of the Hurricanes’ 78 points (62.8 percent).
Rice and Barnes have really stepped up their games in BIG EAST play. Rice (16.3 ppg) and Barnes (15.2 ppg) are the Hurricanes top two scorers in conference play.
UM TIES SCHOOL RECORD FOR WINS IN 1999-00: Miami won 23 games last season tying the school single season record for victories. Miami’s single season record of 23 victories was set during the 1959-60 season and later tied during 1962-63 and 1998-99 seasons.
WINNING WAYS: With its 63-57 win over Connecticut on February 19, the University of Miami clinched its six consecutive winning season. The last time Miami recorded at least six straight winning seasons was the 1968-69 campaign when the `Canes registered their 10th straight winning season.
MIAMI vs. NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS: Since becoming the 10th member of The BIG EAST Conference beginning with the 1991-92 season, the Hurricanes have compiled a 63-34 (.649) record against non-conference opponents, including a 45-13 mark (.776) at the Miami Arena.
VERSUS RANKED OPPONENTS: UM is 1-2 against ranked teams this season. Miami was 3-5 versus ranked teams last season . The Hurricanes are 13-16 versus ranked opponents since 1996-97 and have defeated at least one ranked team in each of the last seven seasons. Miami is 22-81 (.214) all-time against ranked teams including a 19-67 (.221) record since the rebirth of the program in 1985.
MIAMI REACHES SWEET 16 FOR FIRST TIME: With its 75-62 win over Ohio State in the second round of last season’s NCAA tournament, the University of Miami advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history.
Miami has advanced to post-season play in five of the last six seasons including three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.
ROAD WARRIORS: Since the 1998-99 season, Miami is 16-5 in BIG EAST road games. The 16-5 mark ranks second behind Syracuse for the best record among BIG EAST schools over that period. Miami, which was 8-1 in BIG EAST road games in 1998-99, was 7-1 in conference road games last season. Miami is 1-3 this season on the road. The Hurricanes have won 17 of their last 22 BIG EAST road games dating back to the 1997-98 season.
A NEW HOME COURT: The University of Miami will play on new floor at the Miami Arena this season. The floor was donated by Dr. Eddie Dauer and Sam Burstyn and is adorned in the Hurricanes’ colors of orange, green and white.
