Basketball's James Jones Named Academic All-Star

CORAL GABLES, Fl (www.hurricanesports.com) – Sophomore James Jones is a standout member of the University of Miami men’s basketball team, as well as holding membership on the NABC College Basketball Student-Athlete Congress. He has been selected as the Publix Student Athlete of the Week after garnering a 3.34 GPA in School of Business.
He is now being recognized as the Department of Athletics November Academic All-Star.
On the court, Jones will battle for action at both the small forward and power forward positions after seeing action in 33 games as a freshman for the regular season BIG EAST Champions last season. He averaged 3.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per game and looks to increase on those averages during the upcoming 2000-01 season under new head coach Perry Clark.
As a freshman last season, Jones made is debut against Central Florida on November 19. In the game, he came off the bench to score eight points and grab two rebounds in 13 minutes of action. His first double-digit scoring effort came at UNC-Charlotte where he totaled 11 points in 12 minutes of play.
At the 1999 NCAA Tournament, Jones saw action in all three games for the Hurricanes as they progressed to the Sweet Sixteen. He averaged 4.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. In the Tournament-opener against Arkansas, Jones scored two points and grabbed two rebounds in eight minutes. In the round of 32 against Ohio State, he added five points and two rebounds. His best effort came in the Sweet Sixteen match-up against Tulsa, where Jones scored six points, while going 2-2 from behind the three-point line.
