Clarke Injured During 400-meter Semifinal

Sydney, Australia – Two-time NCAA National Champion Davian Clarke pulled up with an injury during his semifinal heat and did not qualify for the final of the 400-meters at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Clarke, competing for Jamaica, pulled up lame 100 meters into his race and was unable to continue. Whether the injury will keep him from competing in the 4×400-meter relay is unknown. Competition in the 4×400-meter relay begins Friday, September 29.

Clarke advanced to the semifinals with a victory in his quarterfinal heat. His quarterfinal time of 45.06 was the third fastest of the preliminaries.

Clarke, competing in his second Olympic games, anchored the Jamaican 4×400-meter relay to a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. He also reached the finals of the 400-meters where he finished seventh (44.99).

Clarke was a six-time All-American while at Miami (1994-98) and won NCAA National Championships in the 400-meters in 1996 and 1998. He left UM as the school-record holder in six different events including the indoor 400-meters (45.86), indoor 4×400-meter relay (3:09.75), outdoor 200-meters (20.66), outdoor 400-meters (44.96), outdoor 4×400-meter relay (3:07.15) and the Sprint Medley relay (3:18.20).
