Hurricanes Head to Florida State Championships

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – The University of Miami women’s rowing team looks to defend their State title when they head to Tampa, Fla. for the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championships Saturday, April 9^th on the waters of the Tampa Bypass Canal.

Last year, the Hurricanes claimed eight first place finishes to win the points championship and the Shirly B. Neggard Trophy that is given to the top team in the state of Florida.

Headlined by the Varsity Eight crew that finished in fourth place with a time of 6:56.92 in the Grand Final of the Women’s Cal Cup at last weekend’s San Diego Crew Classic, the Hurricanes will send a total of nine crews to the intrastate event: Junior Varity Eight, Varsity Four `A’, Varsity Four `B’, Junior Varsity Four `A’, Junior Varsity Four `B’, Novice Eight, Novice Four `A’ and a Novice Four `B’.

Miami joins 11 schools from around the state at the event, including Florida Tech, Jacksonville, Florida, Barry, Central Florida, Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Florida State, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical, Stetson and Tampa.

“This is a regatta where we expect a contribution from each and every crew,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “We look forward to making a very strong Hurricane presence at the state level.”
