Hurricanes Sweep the 11th annual Head of the Creek Regatta

The University of Miami women’s rowing team claimed several first place wins at the 11th-annual Head of the Creek on Sunday, October 12, 2003.

The Hurricane Varsity 8+ crew of sophomore Laura Comeau (Cox), sophomore Ashley Marincsin, senior Jenny Krawec, senior Jacqui Julien, junior Deirdre Curran, senior Ananda Chou, senior Caroline Stuart, sophomore Aoife Forde and senior Jordanna Heywood set a course record with a time of 15:37:82.

The Women’s Club 8+ (seven entries), UM’s junior varsity eight took first and the youth eight came in second. They were one second apart from crossing the finish line together. The JV8 consisting of sophomore Jessica Martin (Cox), senior Rachel Sander, senior Bridget Gallagher, sophomore Mackenzie Dove, sophomore Jenny Dunning, sophomore Rachel Clausing, sophomore Jaquelene Heywood, senior Anna Cohen and junior Julie Crane clocked a time of 16:11.75, and the Youth 8+ rowers freshman Meghan Leydecker (Cox), freshman Karen Wiley, freshman Sarah Conlon, freshman Valerie Webb, freshman Laura Coltman, freshman Alicia Alamar, freshman Ashley Via, freshman Molly Wilson, and freshman Marenda Chamberlin had a time of 16:12:67.

The Collegiate Novice 8+ had a time of 19:55:18.

Women Light Weight Single powered by Taurii Coyne won her event and clocked in at 19:54:15.

The Women Champ 4+, UM claimed first with a time of 17:23:36 consisting of Laura Comeau (Cox), Ashley Marincsin, Jenny Krawec, Aoife Forde and Jordanna Heywood, and UM’s second boat consisted of sophomore Jessica Martin (cox), senior Caroline Stuart, senior Jacqui Julien, senior Ananda Chou and junior Deirdre Curran. They both had strong races.

In Women Doubles, Hurricanes consisting of freshman Sarah Conlon and freshman Valerie Webb claim first in a time of 18:38:88, and freshman Laura Coltman and freshman Karen Wiley are second with a time of 18:48:33.

In Women Club 4+ (eight entries), UM ‘B’ clocked a time of 17:48:54 taking first, UM ‘A’ second in a time of 18:12:35 and UM ‘C’ clashed oars with Tampa, Tampa didn’t yield causing UM ‘C’ to place 6th with a time of 19:08:40.

“It is clear from today’s racing we have more depth then ever before. The freshman eight finished less then a second behind the JV8 which will make intersquad practices exciting over the next few weeks. In addition, the varsity eight posted a course record, and accomplished several team goals today. Today, was a great tune-up for the Head of the Charles next weekend,” coach Debra Morgan said.

Hurricane’s return to action October 11 and 12 in Cambridge-Boston, Mass. at the XXXIX Head of the Charles.
